What is ISO 29001?

ISO 29001 is a sector-specific quality management system standard for organisations supplying products and services to the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries. It contains the full text of ISO 9001:2015 and adds requirements that reflect the consequences of failure in this sector.

The 2020 edition replaced the technical specification ISO/TS 29001:2010 and became a full International Standard. Its additions include contingency planning, management of change, risk assessment applied to product and service realisation, product and service quality plans, design verification and validation, and tighter control of suppliers and outsourced activities.

Operators and engineering contractors use ISO 29001 to qualify suppliers of equipment, fabrication, inspection and field services. A certificate shows that a supplier's quality system meets the sector's expectations, not only the general ISO 9001 baseline.

Who it is for

  • Manufacturers of valves, pumps, wellhead and pressure equipment
  • Fabrication, machining and coating shops
  • Inspection, testing and NDT providers
  • Drilling, well and field service contractors
  • Pipe and tubular suppliers
  • Engineering subcontractors to EPC companies

What sets audit time and cost

Application to certification decision usually takes ten to fourteen weeks, with the Stage 2 audit planned around active production or field work so special processes can be observed.

  • Effective number of personnel
  • Design and development responsibility
  • Special processes such as welding, heat treatment and NDT
  • Number of workshops, yards and field locations
  • Integration with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001

Why it matters

What ISO 29001 gives you

  1. 01

    Qualified for operator supply chains

Operators and EPC contractors recognise ISO 29001 in supplier qualification for critical equipment and services.

  2. 02

    Fewer field failures

Quality plans, design validation and controlled special processes reduce defects that are expensive to find offshore or on site.

  3. 03

    Change made safely

A formal management of change process assesses the risk of changes before they affect product or service.

  4. 04

    Prepared for disruption

Contingency plans keep supply going through equipment failure, supplier loss or other disruption.

The audit

What our auditors examine

  1. 01

    Contingency planning

Plans based on assessed risks to keep critical products and services available during disruption.

  2. 02

    Management of change

How changes to organisation, processes, suppliers and products are assessed and approved before implementation.

  3. 03

    Product and service quality plans

Quality plans for contracts or products, with inspection and test points and customer hold points where required.

  4. 04

    Design and development

Design verification and validation, including design outputs such as acceptance criteria and critical characteristics.

  5. 05

    Special processes

Qualification and control of processes such as welding, heat treatment, coating and non-destructive testing.

  6. 06

    Supplier control

Supplier evaluation, verification of purchased product and control of outsourced activities that affect conformity.

How certification works

Every accredited certificate follows the same three-year cycle, with each step recorded and the result published in our register.

  1. 01

    Application and quote

Tell us your scope, sites and headcount. We calculate audit time under the accreditation rules and send a fixed quote and audit plan.

  2. 02

    Stage 1 audit

We review your documented management system, scope and readiness, and agree the Stage 2 plan. Any gaps are reported so you can close them first.

  3. 03

    Stage 2 audit

Auditors check that the system works in practice: interviews, records and observation across the scope. Nonconformities are raised in writing.

  4. 04

    Certification decision

Once corrective actions are accepted, a reviewer who did not take part in the audit makes the decision. Your certificate is issued and listed in the public register.

  5. 05

    Surveillance audits

Shorter audits in the first and second years after certification confirm the system is maintained and improving. The register shows your current status throughout.

  6. 06

    Recertification

Before the three-year certificate expires, a recertification audit reviews the whole system and renews the certificate for another cycle.

We audit; we do not consult.

To keep certification independent, we never design, build or fix the systems we audit, and decisions are made by people who did not take part in the audit. Read our impartiality policy.
