What is ISO 50001?

ISO 50001 sets requirements for an energy management system (EnMS). It asks an organisation to carry out an energy review, identify its significant energy uses, establish energy performance indicators and an energy baseline, and use them to plan and verify improvement.

ISO 50001:2018 aligned the standard with the harmonised structure and clarified energy performance concepts, including normalisation of baselines for relevant variables such as production volume and weather. It was amended in 2024 for climate change.

What sets ISO 50001 apart is that certification requires demonstrated improvement in energy performance, not only a working system. Under ISO 50003, the certification body must see evidence of that improvement before initial certification and again at recertification.

Who it is for

  • Energy-intensive manufacturers
  • Data centres and colocation providers
  • Commercial property owners and facility managers
  • Hospitals, universities and large campuses
  • Transport and logistics fleets
  • Water utilities and pumping operations

What sets audit time and cost

Application to certification decision usually takes ten to sixteen weeks, because enough metered data must exist to show improvement against the baseline before the decision.

  • Annual energy consumption
  • Number of energy types
  • Number of significant energy uses
  • Effective number of EnMS personnel
  • Number of sites and integration with ISO 14001

Why it matters

What ISO 50001 gives you

  1. 01

    Lower energy cost

Attention on significant energy uses and operational control turns energy data into savings that last.

  2. 02

    Verified improvement

Certification depends on demonstrated energy performance improvement, which gives reported savings external credibility.

  3. 03

    Better decisions on equipment

Energy performance is considered in design and procurement, not only after equipment is installed.

  4. 04

    Support for emissions reporting

Reliable energy data and baselines feed carbon accounting and climate disclosures.

The audit

What our auditors examine

  1. 01

    Energy review

Analysis of energy use and consumption, identification of significant energy uses and of improvement opportunities.

  2. 02

    Indicators and baselines

Energy performance indicators suited to your operations, baselines normalised for relevant variables and the method for updating them.

  3. 03

    Operational control

Criteria for the operation and maintenance of significant energy uses, communicated to the people who run them.

  4. 04

    Design and procurement

How energy performance is considered when designing facilities and processes and buying energy-using equipment and services.

  5. 05

    Data collection plan

Measurement of key characteristics, meter accuracy and the energy data used for decisions.

  6. 06

    Demonstrated improvement

Evidence, from indicators against the baseline, that energy performance has improved.

How certification works

Every accredited certificate follows the same three-year cycle, with each step recorded and the result published in our register.

  1. 01

    Application and quote

Tell us your scope, sites and headcount. We calculate audit time under the accreditation rules and send a fixed quote and audit plan.

  2. 02

    Stage 1 audit

We review your documented management system, scope and readiness, and agree the Stage 2 plan. Any gaps are reported so you can close them first.

  3. 03

    Stage 2 audit

Auditors check that the system works in practice: interviews, records and observation across the scope. Nonconformities are raised in writing.

  4. 04

    Certification decision

Once corrective actions are accepted, a reviewer who did not take part in the audit makes the decision. Your certificate is issued and listed in the public register.

  5. 05

    Surveillance audits

Shorter audits in the first and second years after certification confirm the system is maintained and improving. The register shows your current status throughout.

  6. 06

    Recertification

Before the three-year certificate expires, a recertification audit reviews the whole system and renews the certificate for another cycle.

ISO 50001 questions

We audit; we do not consult.

To keep certification independent, we never design, build or fix the systems we audit, and decisions are made by people who did not take part in the audit. Read our impartiality policy.
